How to play

Three steps. One mystery animal.

You can begin immediately. There are no categories to configure, accounts to create, or instructions to memorize.

  1. We choose an animal

A mystery animal is selected when the game begins. It could live on land, in the ocean, in the air—or somewhere in between.

  2. You investigate

Ask questions that can be answered with yes, no, or don’t know. Try habitat, size, appearance, diet, or behavior.

  3. Make your guess

Name the animal as soon as the clues add up. Guess correctly before question 20 and you win the round.

This game

You are the detective.

We choose the animal. You decide which questions to ask, interpret the clues, and make the final guess. Every round tests your strategy and animal knowledge.

What makes it different

Built from facts, not improvisation.

Your questions are not simply handed to a general-purpose language model to invent an answer. The live game uses specialized question matching, game logic, and a carefully maintained animal dataset.

We have spent a substantial amount of time researching and reviewing animal traits—including anatomy, habitat, diet, behavior, color, size, and common names. Modern AI tools may assist parts of that research, but the game’s answers are grounded in the curated facts and rules we maintain.

Questions understood in many forms

Synonyms and alternate wording help connect natural questions to the intended animal trait.

Facts reviewed and refined

The dataset is continually expanded, corrected, and improved as we research animals and see real questions from players.

Question strategy

What should you ask?

Good early questions divide the animal world into large groups. Once you have a direction, ask about distinctive traits and save direct guesses until the field is smaller.

Start broad
“Does it live mostly in water?”

Habitat questions quickly eliminate many possibilities.

Classify it
“Is it a mammal?”

Animal families and body types can narrow the search dramatically.

Find a signature trait
“Does it have stripes?”

Color, coverings, limbs, and other physical clues are useful later.

Ask for help
“Hint”

If you get stuck, type hint and the game will reveal another clue.

Quick answers

About the game

Is the game free?

Yes. You can play in your web browser without creating an account.

Who asks the questions?

You do. Unlike many 20 Questions games, the computer chooses the mystery animal and you try to identify it.

Can I ask any question?

The game works best with a single yes-or-no question about the animal. Ask about traits, habitat, diet, behavior, or make a direct animal guess.

Does a language model generate every answer?

No. The live game primarily uses a curated animal-fact dataset and purpose-built matching logic, so answers are grounded in maintained facts instead of being improvised from scratch. If no verified animal fact is found, the game can use an LLM as a fallback.

What happens after question 20?

If you have not solved it, the game reveals the mystery animal and starts a fresh round.

Ready to investigate?

The mystery animal is waiting.

Your first round begins as soon as the game loads. What will your opening question be?
